On December 12-13, 2024, the Tax Administration EU Summit (TADEUS) brought together Heads of tax administrations from across the European Union to address pressing and complex challenges. Hosted in Budapest, the summit demonstrated the strong commitment of EU tax authorities to collaborate and find collective solutions.

In a video message, Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra stressed the importance of partnership and mutual trust among EU tax administrations. He underlined their vital role in enforcing EU tax policies, bridging tax gaps, and combating tax fraud.

EU Tax Administration leaders tackled a range of critical issues, including reducing tax gaps and monitoring the outcomes of their joint efforts to combat tax fraud. The agenda also focused on:

  • Enhancing the use of DAC data and improving EUROFISC operations through a more streamlined approach in the short term.
  • Exploring innovative digital strategies to optimise the implementation of EU legislation.
  • Leveraging Data Science and Artificial Intelligence to advance tax administration capabilities.
  • Developing collective measures to bolster digital security.

A Call for Effective Tax Systems

Gerassimos Thomas, Director-General for Taxation and Customs Union, delivered the opening address, focusing on the significance of efficient tax systems for the EU’s prosperity. He highlighted the ongoing strain on public finances across Europe and the need for robust tax revenue collection. Tax administrations, he noted, are instrumental in sustaining the Union’s budget and advancing its policies.
